Celebrating 10 Years of Inspiring Digital Talent through BIMA Digital Day
On November 13th, Netcel proudly marked a decade of supporting BIMA Digital Day, when COO, Becky Crouch, and Senior Developer, Dave Johnson, stepped out of the office and into the classroom at Parmiter’s School in Garston. They led an engaging, hands-on session which aimed to spark curiosity and enthusiasm, encouraging students to explore the exciting opportunities in the digital sector.
What is BIMA Digital Day?
BIMA Digital Day, created by the British Interactive Media Association (BIMA), connects more than 70 digital consultancies with around 3000 secondary school students annually. Through creative workshops, the initiative introduces 11-16-year-olds to the dynamic world of digital careers, aiming to spark interest and empower students to envision their future in tech.
Reflecting on Netcel’s 10 years of involvement, Becky commented:
‘The creativity and passion students demonstrate during BIMA Digital Day never fail to amaze me. It’s a privilege to help them explore the possibilities of a digital career and to show how the skills they develop today can shape the future of the industry.’
This Year’s Digital Challenges
This year the students got to choose one of three challenges set by leading organisations:
- Microsoft: Reimagine homework and hobbies using AI tools like Microsoft Copilot, Teams, and Minecraft to create inclusive, engaging learning experiences.
- Burberry: Position their iconic trench coat as a symbol of sustainability and British craftsmanship, appealing to a younger, eco-conscious audience.
- RSPCA: Use technology—apps, social media, or VR—to educate consumers about RSPCA Assured standards and the importance of high-welfare farming.
Working in teams, the students researched their chosen organisation and brainstormed ideas for a digital product or service to solve their challenge.
Throughout the day, Becky and Dave guided the students with three key principles:
- Inclusivity: Ensure the technology is user-friendly and accessible to everyone.
- Creativity: Explore every aspect of digital innovation, including apps, VR, AI, and social platforms.
- Practicality: Focus on solving real challenges and making ideas achievable.
At the end of the day, each group presented their concept to a panel of judges, including Becky and Dave alongside school staff. The winning team’s innovative concept will now be entered into the nationwide competition, with the chance to win £500 for the school and individual prizes for team members.
